Hi guys.
About three years ago me and other fools began the adventure of a blog called Power Pop Lovers.
Unfortunately the adventure was only active for a year more or less, the reason: a 'person' a little bit intransigent.
Each of the partners has taken different steps and now mantain blogs that are visited daily by thousands of lovers of the good music.
Finally I've decided to reopen the old Power Pop Lovers Blog published simultaneously on wordpress and blogger with the same inputs in order to recover and keep those wonderful albums to enjoy the nostalgic and new discoverers of them.

For that reason I'm going to close PVAc Blog slowly and move the old posts there reuploading those files whose links have expired with new servers more operatives than rapidshare, because Rapidshare has ceased to be an attractive host to upload.
Gradually I try to upload the albums in lossless format (FLAC) for collectors and mp3 (320) for the other users. Please! be patient because I have only 640 kb upstream, and the uploads are very slow.
To avoid download problems and unnecessary delays, I recommend to use JDownloader (can be used in windows, linux and mac). It's easy to use and you can queue multiple downloads for all the upload servers. JDownloader recognize captchas and is perfect to download files from the servers with a big speed.

The Bongos - 1982 - Drums Along the Hudson

The Bongos recorded their early singles and their well-received debut EP for UK-based Fetish Records. Their debut U.S. album, Drums Along The Hudson, compiled from the band's British singles, was released in 1982 to mostly favorable reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. While Trouser Press suggested that the group "may trade a certain amount of substance for easy appeal," it added that "there's no better musical equivalent of whipped cream anywhere."
Writing in the Village Voice, Robert Christgau dryly commented that "for all their jumpy originality [the songs are] still slight, and Richard Barone's lyrics are so oblique you have to wonder what his angle is.
In 2007 however, Jim DeRegotis wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times: "The initial impression of naivete is offset by deceptively simple lyrics that actually hint at deep, dark mysteries and unfathomed mystical enigmas."
The group's cover of T. Rex's "Mambo Sun" reached #72 on the Billboard Dance Chart.

From Oakland, California, the Loved Ones. In a city that produces mainly rap, the Loved Ones were certainly an anomaly, but they became one of the most popular and original bands on the local scene. While most musicians in their early 20s draw upon more trendy influences, the mod-topped members of this quartet built the foundation of their sound on '60s maximum R&B with the gritty stylings of early Chicago blues.
Imagine Mick Jagger and Howlin' Wolf driving down the freeway on a Vespa on their way to see a James Brown concert, and you've got the idea. From their '60s-styled live-in-the-studio production to their vintage instruments, The Loved Ones are the real thing.

Everything Is OK !

Hi Vex and all who asked for me.
Everything's Ok !
I have had a problem with my uploads. I couldn't upload files larger than 1 Mb (at 1024 kb the upload crashes).
I've been trying to fix the problem the last two months and finally I've found the solution thanks to one person in an spanish forum.
There are a Windows XP SP3 update crash (more people has the same problem...)
The solution:
With Linux or any windows (not XP) O.S. the problem is fixed.
Now I have two O.S. in my PC (Linux and Windows 7) and I can upload all the files without problems.
I'm reuploading all the links broken (Wire Train, Cosecha Roja...)
When all the files were uploaded I will turn to post new files.

DMZ - 1992 - When I Get Off (The Classic Originals!)

Before Jeff "Monoman" Connolly formed Boston's seminal garage rock terrorists the Lyres, he was in a late-'70s prototype known as DMZ. With the exception of a few musicians, DMZ and the Lyres were essentially same-sounding bands; DMZ just played with a little more speed and punk verve. Oddly enough, during the late-'70s signing frenzy of any band even remotely associated with the punk scenes in Boston and New York City, DMZ got a shot with Sire Records. The label, exhibiting near-total artistic myopia, teamed the band up with goofball has-beens Flo and Eddie as producers. While the resulting record was panned, it's far from a disaster, due mainly to DMZ's ferocity and trashy ebullience. Fans of mid-'60s rock such as the Seeds, ? and the Mysterians, and the Kinks, and who have an unending jones for speedy trash-rock and whiny Farfisa organs, will love DMZ.

Tommy Conwell & The Young Rumblers: Rumble (1988) + Guitar Trouble (1990)

Throughout the half-century or so of rock music history, styles have shifted and trends have waxed and waned, but good old raunchy, ragged rock and roll has never once gone out of style. Oh, there have been periods when such music was rather hard to find: portions of the '60s when hippie psychedelia ruled, the late-'70s disco explosion, and, I'm sorry to say, a good bit of the '80s. Thankfully, that's where the criminally overlooked bar band Tommy Conwell & the Young Rumblers comes in.
The band's delightful, greasy blues-rock masterpiece "I'm Not Your Man" was a big hit on rock radio in 1988, but somehow its fate wasn't nearly as favorable on the pop charts. Maybe that's because the tune is plenty odd, complete with a Tom Waits-ish spoken-word intro and some wonderfully loopy lyrics throughout. In addition, the group's bar-band roots lack the smooth edges most pop radio programmers have always demanded. But that's what makes this song such a timeless relic, as it didn't fit in the '80s but its singularity makes it hard to decide in which era it would exactly fit. Conwell's gravelly voice takes a chameleonic path to musical transcendence, spitting out witty and playful lyrics at a time when music could have used the breath of fresh air it supplied. Nervous Eaters - 2002 - Eat This!

Hello again. I'm back. I've needed a few days to put all in order.
These guys are somewhat of a Boston legend. Probably best known for their killer 1970s singles "Just Head," which made reappearance on one of the earliest volumes of the Killed By Death series, and "Loretta." They made one ill-conceived and way overproduced album for Elektra in 1980, and then returned for a fantastically raw mini-LP for Ace Of Hearts called Hot Steel And Acid in the 80s. Since that time, those early singles have been covered by the Lazy Cowgirls, New Bomb Turks, Teengenerate, the Vikings and the RC5. Though they never set out to be a punk band, their sheer rawness had many peg them as so, although leader Steve Cataldo has always said it was the proto-punk of the Stooges And MC5, as well as a lot of early blues music (Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Paul Butterfield were faves), and early rock and roll (Elvis, Little Richard, etc), among others, that was fueling them. For this new release, recorded over the last couple of years by Cataldo and various cronies including Eaters alumni Rich Bartlett (once in the Fools) and Allen 'Alpo' Paulino, (also in the Real Kids), Billy Loosigan and Jeff Erna of the Dropkick Murphies. This is a pretty solid collection of no-frills rock and roll on the raw side for sure. There's elements of powerpop, garage rock and punk throughout it all, and some killer guitar action. Red Rockers: Good As Gold (1983) + Schizophrenic Circus (1984) [1995 Reissue]

Thus armed with no great expectations, Good as Gold came as something of a surprise, starting with the first track. Gone was the raging rhetoric, replaced by a startlingly pretty pop song, "China" filled with articulate, ringing guitars and John Griffith's newly smoothed-up vocals. With ex-Stiff Little Fingers drummer Jim Reilly in the lineup, Red Rockers switched to melodic pop-rock, much like 415 labelmates Translator but with more emphasis on electric drive and generally less-exceptional songwriting.
Good as Gold is consistently good and "China" deservedly became a hit single, but the band failed to really catch on commercially, and returned with an equally bewildering follow-up, Schizophrenic Circus. Seemingly an attempt to become America's Alarm, the LP — produced by Rick Chertoff — goes nouveau-country and encompasses both the anthemic, folky "Blood From a Stone" (covering the Hooters) and a totally unnecessary remake of "Eve of Destruction." Danger sign: too little original material of any significant quality.

This is a live concert of this fantastic band that I found in the net years ago. It was recorded at The Concert Factory, Costa Mesta, California on March 5th, 1983.
It's based on the songs of their two first albums "Baroque Hoedown" and "Sixteen Tambourines", probably the best albums of the band.
The quality of the sound is good.
This is a very good moment to remember the live sound of one of the L.A. classic bands of the 80's.

"Actually this is not only the Concert Factory but 2 songs are from another concert (1982); the songs are "Marjorie Tells Me" and "It's All Too Much" and they were performed at Berkeley Square (1982).
I transferred this from a K7 some years ago making therefore a mix of the two concerts - the best of the two concerts being the Concert Factory, so it was the core of the rip. (Anonymous)"

The Three O'Clock: Ever After (1986) + Vernillion (1988)

Ever After saw Gutierrez exit the group (he's now in Louis and Clark), to be replaced by Steven Altenberg without any major changes in the group's sound or direction. Shortly after its release, the group parted ways with IRS, spent some time in legal limbo and then signed to Paisley Park. Apparently, Prince had heard and liked them (not too surprising, since Around the World in a Day draws on many of the same influences as Three O'Clock's records), though they'd never actually met. With Jason Falkner replacing Altenberg and Ian Ritchie producing, the group recorded Vermillion, their most interesting and varied album to date, which includes Prince's (sorry, Joey Coco's) "Neon Telephone" — just right for them — a lead vocal apiece by Falkner and keyboardist Mike Mariano (both great) and Quercio's six-minute ballad, "Through the Sleepy Town." Three O'Clock broke up later that year, with Quercio going on to form Permanent Green Light.

The Three O'Clock - 1985 - Arrive Without Travelling

Psychedelic rock & roll is here to stay – it's turning heads from Los Angeles to London, and even Prince has been tunneling backward to the mindbending sound of the lysergic Sixties. Among the leaders of the pack are the Three O'Clock, who look and sound like the Monkees and the Left Banke rolled up into one big paisley-pop package. Theirs are not the can't-find-my-mind acid agonies of the Blue Cheer and Hendrix axis, but rather the happy, helium-timbre choristering of Flower Power advocates high on groovy colors and good vibes.
Arrive without Travelling suggests, by its very title, that hallucinogens may make a comeback as a new mental mass-transit system. Certainly, the grooves within are saturated with music so sweetly bent that ordinary reality alone could not have inspired them. "Her Head's Revolving" starts out eight miles high and goes up from there, as distorted guitar riffs and fey harmonies mount around the syncopated 4/4 slam of the drums to a crescendoing frenzy not heard on record since the Yardbirds' "I'm Not Talking." "Knowing When You Smile," "Half the Way There" and "Another World" are equally wonderful, made up of gossamer vocal textures, a crisp, martial rhythmic attack and keyboard-laced pop melodies played with almost classical precision.
Some of the material borders on the predictable ("Simon in the Park," which bows to the East) or the precious ("Mrs. Green," an oversweet confection), and the music on Arrive without Travelling is more tributary than original. But when the Three O'Clock comes up with "Spun Gold," a song as magnificent as, say, the Left Banke's great lost single "Desiree," one can only be grateful for music like this in the Eighties. The songs on Baroque Hoedown have poppier vocals and equally engaging music. The addition of ex-Quick/Weirdos drummer Danny Benair also brought the quartet a harder edge. Don't miss their cover of the Easybeats' "Sorry."
Sixteen Tambourines is even better — an incredible full-length collection of chiming, memorable power pop tunes played and sung as if each track were likely to get played on every radio station coast-to-coast. Slick and inventive production by Earle Mankey delivers the songs (most co-written by guitarist Louis Gutierrez and bassist Michael Quercio) in utterly engaging style. Best numbers: "On My Own," "Jet Fighter," "And So We Run." Absolutely charming and remarkably memorable.

Befour Three O'Clock - 1992 - Happen Happened [reissue]

One of the brightest lights of new American pop psychedelia, LA's Salvation Army debuted with an album that was liable to inspire young bands all around the world to join in the fun. The trio's melodies have the ethereal quality of a young Syd Barrett; the music is a blend of all the most colorful '60s sounds, showing the influence of such groups as the Byrds, Move, Hollies, Music Machine and others.
Following legal action by the real Salvation Army (concerns over musical competition?), the group changed its name to the Three O'Clock. (Three years later, Frontier cleverly repackaged the original album as Befour Three O'Clock.)

Racey - 1979 - Smash And Grab

The members of Racey came from all around. But when Racey was first formed in 1976 by singer RICHARD GOWER, they began their career by playing in pubs and clubs in the West of England. By the autumn of 1976 they performed their first professional shows and were booked to play a one-month residency at the night club JOMFRUBURET, Copenhagen, Denmark. (Jomfruburet meaning 'lady's bower' - while the place was quite the opposite).
After returning to the UK where they were spotted by famous record producer MICKIE MOST whilst playing a t the Three Queens Pub in Weston-Super-Mare.
Despite the fact that 1977 was the height of punk rock boom and clean-cut bands were considered unfashionable, Mickie Most was impressed by the bands live performance and original songs and signed them to his RAK label.
In November 1978, the bands second single LAY YOUR LOVE ON ME was released and became an enormous Christmas hit. Penned by hitmakers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman it sold over 950,000 copies in the UK alone to make it RAK Records biggest ever hit single. It went on to become a chart hit all over Europe and a No.1 hit in Australia and New Zealand.
In March 1979, Racey released their next single SOME GIRLS, also song written by Chinn/Chapman. They had originally written the song for Debbie Harry and Blondie but following the success of Lay Your Love on me decided to give it to Racey to record instead. The record became Racey’s biggest hit reaching No. 1 in 12 countries, eventually selling over 5,000,000 copies worldwide. Some Girls is still a favourite with radio Stations and club DJs and is guaranteed to fill dance floors around the world.
The bands first album SMASH AND GRAB sold over 1,000,000 copies reaching No. 1 in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and many other European countries. It reached the accolade of Treble Platinum status in Australia where it remains one of the best selling albums of all time. Racey eventually earned 35 Gold, Silver and Platinum sales awards.
In 1981 Tony Basil recorded the song KITTY taken from Racey’s album Smash and Grab which she renamed MICKEY and took the No.1 spot in the USA chart and most other countries.

Jane Wiedlin: Selftitled (1985) + Fur (1988) + Tangled (1990)

Jane Wiedlin was part of the LA punk scene that spawned bands like X and The Dickies and went by the name "Jane Drano." As a member of The Go-Go's, she had a brief love affair with Specials and Fun Boy Three member Terry Hall. It was the ups and downs of this long-distance celebrity relationship with Hall that inspired the hit Go-Go's song "Our Lips Are Sealed". In 1983, Jane Wiedlin recorded "Cool Places" with the new wave band Sparks.
In 1984, Wiedlin was the first to leave the Go-Go's to pursue a solo career. She released four solo albums, Jane Wiedlin (1985), Fur (1988) which included the top 10 hit single "Rush Hour", Tangled (1990). Her first three efforts sold poorly and she was dropped from EMI Records. She formed a punk band, froSTed (the unusual orthography coming from the fact Wiedlin is a huge Star Trek fan), which released an album in 1995 to good reviews but poor sales. Kissproof World was released in 2000 on Painful Discs Records. In addition to "Rush Hour," notable singles include "Blue Kiss", "Inside a Dream" and "World on Fire", the latter of which sported a semi-controversial video.

"In 1979, two years after Procol Harum disbanded (until their reunion in 1991), singer/songwriter/pianist Gary Brooker released his first solo album, "No More Fear Of Flying." In short, if you love Procol Harum, then you'll love Gary solo, too. "No More Fear Of Flying" is an excellent album of top-notch, Harum-flavored piano pop/rock, spearheaded by Brooker's powerful voice and masterful playing on the keys. Great songs include the title track, the lovely "Say It Ain't So Joe" (written by Murray Head) and "Angelina," the catchy "Give Me Something To Remember You By" and "Get Up And Dance." There's also two bonus tracks to enjoy: the rare Brooker B-side "S.S. Blues" and the previously-unreleased fun of "Fat Cats." Gary Brooker's "No More Fear Of Flying" is a great disc." Like a faraway sun that lit up the nighttime sky for a brief moment before the flame in its core went out, The Raspberries burst on the U. S. pop music scene out of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1972. Their sound has been praised and copied by the likes of John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Elton John, Courtney Love and many others.
Never a "major" act, they did score seven Hot 100 singles (even a million-seller with "Go All The Way") between 1972-74 and planted four albums in the rock garden of Billboard magazines Top 200 Albums chart.

Before she unleased The Pandoras on an unsuspecting world, Paula Pierce was the lead guitarist/singer/ songwriter in Action Now, a garage power pop band hailing from Southern California's San Gabriel Valley.
Using the original master tapes, thought lost for almost 20 years, the French-only "All Your Dreams" album has been mastered for CD for the first time by remastering genius Bill Inglot, who also originally produced seven of the studio tracks.
Completing the story is "Try" from "Rodney On The ROQ, Vol. III" and a complete Action Now live show, mastered from the original two-track tape, rediscovered after 22 years.
This CD contains the original version of "Stop Pretending ," the title song from The Pandoras' Rhino Records LP along with a live version of "Anyone
But You," later recorded for that same 1986 Pandoras LP. In all, this collection features 26 songs never before on CD, 25 songs never released in the United States and five previously unreleased Paula Pierce-penned tunes.
Playing alongside Paula and making the Action Now sound happen were Jim Schuster (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mike Lawrence (bass, vocals) and Scott
Hillman (drums).

Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - 1984 - Rattlesnakes

Rattlesnakes was the debut album by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions and was released in 1984. The album reached #13 in the UK record charts and included the hit singles "Perfect Skin" (#26 in UK), "Forest Fire" (#41 in UK) and "Rattlesnakes" (#65 in UK, #31 in the Netherlands).
The bulk of the album was written by frontman Lloyd Cole, who formed the band while a student at the University of Glasgow. Cole cites Bob Dylan and Booker T. & the MGs as major influences, but also notes the impact of his studies in English and philosophy on both the album's title, a reference to the novel Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion, and its lyrics, which also reference Renata Adler, Simone de Beauvoir and Norman Mailer.

Any Trouble - 1980 - Where Are All the Nice Girls?

Two years have passed since my first post. Over 865,000 hits and an infinity of comments.
Good and bad moments.
I have to give the thanks to all those who have helped me to build this small music site.
Thank you very much to Paul, Patrick, Davester, Bluecartoon, Geekroick, Popcat, Rush2112, Josega65, Tomy, Chang1112, D. Moose and to all those that have supported me and those with their comments have given me forces to continue.
To celebrate it, this 5 stars album with other of my all times favourite song: Yesterday's Love.
Manchester-native Gregson formed the original band in 1975 while attending teaching school in Crewe, taking the group's name from a misquote from the Mel Brooks film Blazing Saddles. After a brief moment as a folky trio with singer Tom Jackson, by 1976 Any Trouble changed to a four-piece rock group, speeding up their repertoire in response to the punk movement -- by this point the lineup was Gregson (vocals/guitar), Chris Parks (guitar), Phil Barnes (bass), and Mel Harley (drums). They built a strong following playing the pub circuit and released their own single, catching the attention of Radio One's John Peel, who quickly took the band and played the song on his show. This exposure started a small-scale bidding war from several labels. By 1980, the group signed with Stiff Records.
John Wood , a renowned producer (Nick Drake, John Martyn, Richard Thompson) who had recently produced Squeeze, was hired to produce Any Trouble's first album. Where Are All the Nice Girls? which had all the makings of a new wave classic, was met with some rave reviews but failed to rack up the big sales that were expected of it. After the record failed commercially, Stiff suggested that Gregson drop the band and redefine himself as a solo artist a la Elvis Costello - Buddy Gregson. Gregson declined, deciding instead to replace the band's drummer Harley, with the more capable Martin Hughes . They began work on the follow-up immediately.

"Recorded after the collapse of The Funky Kings, 1978's cleverly-titled "Jack Tempchin" may be the best Eagles album the band never recorded. Produced by Pete Carr (who nailed Don Felder's unique guitar sound on several tracks) and recorded at Muscle Shoals' Fame Studios, Tempchin had a surprisingly attractive voice and a knack for penning catchy country-rock material.
Your life won't be changed by any of this, but if you like early-career Eagles then you'll probably enjoy tracks such as 'Stingaree', 'She Belonged To Me' and 'Fifteen Days Under the Hood'. Other highlights included Tempchin's collaboration with Tom Waits 'Tijuana' and 'Pick Up Truck' (The Eagles should have covered this one as well). Elsewhere the biggest disappointment is Tempchin's version of 'Peaceful Easy Feeling'. Slowing it down to a dirge with Jennifer Warren's providing harmony vocals is simply the wrong thing to do to this country-rock classic."

Our man was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 7, 1951. At the age of 10 years discovered simultaneously the pop music, the mode and the girls. He bought then his first album, an EP of Chubby Checker, the king of the twist. In 1962, when the Beatles appeared, Sergio already was an assiduous client of the record shop of his neighborhood. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, etc., they changed his life forever.
At the age of 17, already immersed in the culture of the rock, he composed his first song: "Peter Pan", then he formed with her brother Eduardo the acoustic duo "Los Hermanos Makaroff".
The first shows of them were like supporters of Sui Generis, the Charly García band, of whom Sergio had turned into assistant. Later they recorded, with Charly and the major page of the Argentine rockers, the legendary "El Rock del Ascensor".
In 1978 Sergio decided to emigrate to Spain, where his friends Ariel Rot and Alejo Stivel had formed Tequila and they were triumphing for everything high. In the digest of the mythical group there were "El Rock del Ascensor" and other tweo songss composed by Sergio. Across these Spanish contacts it obtained a contract with Epic and recorded his first solo album, "Tengo Una Idea ". It happened from Madrid to Barcelona at the end of ' 78 and there it continues up to today. His first group of accompaniment was the core of those who then would be Los Rápidos, Los Burros y El Último De La Fila. Manolo García was his drummer.

Turning in to the discography of my dear country, today I bring to you and authentic jewel of the New Wave from Spain.
When I was 22, "Los Pistones" published an anthem for the Madrid New Wavers: "Las 7 menos cuarto" (in english "A quarter to 7 pm") is a complete song. The story passes in "La Puerta del Sol", the center of Madrid and the center of Spain. A boy is waiting for a girl, but she never goes to the date. Like every evenings, he's waitng and finally goes to take a drink because she doesn't call him. He's depressed and plains a revenge, but he can't do anything, only listen music and as everyday wait for her, but always she forgot to call him... day by day,... always the same, waiting, another drink.. music...
I feel over 30 years younger listen it.
With other three good songs, specially "Te brillan Los Ojos", this is a cult EP from Spain.

DMZ - 1978 - Selftitled

DMZ was the pre-Lyres band, with Jeff Conolly and Peter Greenberg.
This album got a bad rep when it was released and still continues to this day to be a bit frowned upon. Sure, the songs are good but the production ruins it people claim. To be honest, this is much better than its reputed to be. Sure, theres nothing here on the level of what Monoman would do later on with The Lyres, but the songs themselves absolutely rip and the production by Flo and Eddie adds a loud and stomping thud that I feel entirely complements the music. The pair of Northwest covers "Cinderella" (originally by The Sonics) and "Out of Our Tree" (The Wailers) are almost just as good as the originals, and despite the album petering out a bit towards the end, its still a pretty fantastic release. This was one of the cornerstones of the Boston underground scene at the time, and really paved the way for much of the 80s garage rock revival.

Red Guitars - 1984 - Steeltown + Good Technology (EP's)

Steeltown was recorded at Fairview Studios, Willerby. The recording was engineered by Roy Neave and produced by Roy Neave and the Red Guitars.
The track was released in 7" (SCAR010) and 12" (SCAR010T) formats on Friday 22nd of June 1984 by Self Drive Records. Both versions had Within 4 Walls on the b-side.
The Red Guitars performed ‘Steeltown’ and ‘Fact’ live on the Whistle Test on Friday 20th January 1984.
Good Technology was recorded at Fairview Studios, Willerby between the 18th and 28th of April 1983 and re-mixed on the 8th of May. The recording was engineered by Roy Neave and produced by Roy Neave and the Red Guitars.
It was issued as a 7" single on the 24th of June 1983 with "Heartbeat Go! (Love Dub)" on the b-side. This was the first release on Self Drive Records and had the catalogue number SD006.
The same track was re-released in 7" and 12" formats in April 1984. The 7" (SD009) backed with "Paris France", the 12" (SD008T) having an extended mix of "Paris France" and "Fact" on the b-side.
This was the third serious attempt to capture the song on tape. The Czechs recorded it at Ken Giles' studio in Bridlington, as did a one-off ensemble including Stuart Ross at a studio on Mayfield Street in Hull.
The song was voted number eleven in John Peel's Festive Fifty, Christmas 1983

A much tougher sound than the self titled album, The Kids Are The Same is good follow up. With should have been hits such as That's What Life's All about or I will Say No, this album is one of the great lost classics of the 80s.
However, CBS did release On The Highway and it didn't chart. Had they decided to make That's What Life's All About a single, perhaps things would have been better for Paul Collins and company. To celebrate the 444 albums, the original cd version (out of print) of one of the all times Top Ten albums of the Power Pop.
Collins was able to ink a deal with Columbia/CBS and Bill Graham Management. CBS released their self-titled debut in October 1979. All 12 songs were Collins originals; Steven Huff, Peter Case, and Eddie Money had one co-writing credit each, all on different songs. Continuing in The Nerves' vein, the album consisted of harmony-laden, driving guitar pop songs, including a re-recorded version of "Working Too Hard". The album was critically acclaimed and is today remembered as a classic of the power pop genre (see this 4.5-star review in Allmusic). The group appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand on March 8, 1980 and that same year contributed a song to the soundtrack LP of the massively popular movie Caddyshack. Despite this promotion, diligent touring alongside such popular artists as Ian Gomm and The Jam and a tour of Europe, The Beat found little commercial success. The British ska group of the same name were first to establish themselves as "The Beat" in Europe forcing Collins' "Beat" to be referred to as "Paul Collins' Beat" there. The Collins' "Beat" was first to release their album in their home territory in turn forcing the British group to use the name "The English Beat" in the U.S.

"Although I first heard Robin Lane's "When Things Go Wrong" in Indiana of all places, I really became a fan of a number Boston punk/new wave bands when I was living in California. Our local college station had the good taste to play The Lyres, Del Fuegos, and Mission of Burma in heavy rotation. This CD picks some really choice selections from these bands. The Thrills and Atlantics both contributed unexpected gems to this CD too.
In addition, the incredible, hypnotic, organ driven tune "6" by The Neats is probably one of my all time favorite psychodelic tracks from the 80's. Without the aid the of any illegal substances, this song can project you into other worldly state of mind.
While a couple of Boston reviewers were obviously taken with this collection, I want to assure the perspective buyer that this music transcends mere regional interest. King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents: The Romantics (1996)

With its infectious E - A - D - A chord progression, and its raucous refrain of "Hey, ... . uh-huh", "What I Like About You" burst on to FM airwaves in 1980, and firmly established The Romantics as kings of the new power pop movement that would eventually yield a wealth of great groups like Shoes, The Cars, and The Dwight Twilley Band.
"What I Like About You" would eventually find its place in rock'n'roll history as the ultimate ~arty song; a standby o.n everyone's mix tapes and, finally, a beer commercial.
But the perpetual radio existence of "What I Like About You" did not translate into the same legendary status for the band that wrote and recorded it. The Romantics, though never gone, did fade for a while before the sweeping nostalgia for the classic 80s bands brought them back to a life of widespread VH-1, radio and touring exposure (Taken from inner sleeve).

Danny & Dusty - 1986 - The Lost Weekend [Re-up cd rip]

It was just about 20 years ago that Dan Stuart and Steve Wynn took a break from their respective ..day job.. bands (Green On Red and The Dream Syndicate) and as Danny & Dusty made the hazy, beer-soaked ..The Lost Weekend". The album truly was recorded in one weekend with members of the Long Ryders (Stephen McCarthy, Sid Griffin, Tom Stevens) as well as Chris Cacavas from Green On Red and Dennis Duck from The Dream Syndicate. "The Lost Weekend.. ended up being a big influence on many pioneers of the Alt-Country movement and has only grown in stature in the years since. Go figure. Still, there hadn't been any seismic indication that the two California natives had any desire to repeat the experience until they found themselves both living in NYC. Upon hearing that Wynn had severely broken his ankle and was laid up at home, Stuart took it as a sign and wondered whether another record might be possible. Venturing uptown with guitar in hand, Danny found Dusty laying on the couch, watching baseball and chewing Vicodins. (Danny & Dusty at myspace)

After The Fire originally formed in 1971/early 1972 with Peter Banks on keyboards, John Leach on bass and Ian Adamson on drums. The original group disbanded in December 1972. Peter went on to play keyboards for Narnia, playing alongside John Russell.
In 1974 Peter and Ian decided to breathe new life into ATF and started auditions for a guitar player. Andy Piercy approached the pair, and after a settling of opinions the Piercy/Banks partnership was formed. The early material took the form of Christian stories. In 1975 Robin Childs joined the band as a bass player.
In 1977 Robin left, replaced by Nick Battle and Ian left to be replaced by a "strange" drummer, Ivor Twidell. By late 1977 Nick had decided to leave but was persuaded to stay to record Signs of Change.
Signs of Change was released on a private label out of frustration with the Christian record labels who insisted that bands pay up-front. It was an outstanding album for it's time, a little dated now, but well thought through and brilliantly executed. The six tracks are reminiscent of early Genesis and Yes, synth-lead with good-sized instrumental breaks. The album had a limited release of 4000 copies and with an even more limited number including a lyric sheet insert - printed white hand written lyrics on black. The album was distributed by mail order.
ATF moved on musically and with Nick leaving Andy switched to bass (not before various bass players had appeared with the band) and John Russell joined the band as the new guitarist, after seeing the band playing at a pub.
The band was eventually signed up by CBS in 1978 and started recording in the winter. During the production of the Laser Love album no less than 5 producers worked with the band (the band also produced 2 tracks), leaving the final release a little dis-jointed. Some of the tracks were recorded twice by different producers.
During August 1979 the band played the Greenbelt festival for the last time (having been regulars in the past few years) - everything about the bands appearance was electric, from the sound check in the early afternoon to the fireworks that finished the overrun evening performance. It gave the band a chance to air the new tracks before the release of the new album in October 1979.
Ivor left the band in October 1979 after ill health led to his collapse on stage, he was replaced by Nick Brotherwood. The band started work on a new album - 80-f. It was turned down by CBS and led to yet another change in drummer, however, the album contained some excellent tracks like Operator that never saw the light again. An acetate of the album is in existence. This delay cost the band a US tour.
Pete King, ex-Flys drummer, was recruited as the new drummer and quickly filled the role. His style matched the band and he settled in as the band started re-recording the album with Mack as the producer. The album was released with two singles, which again, never got the airplay they deserved. The album sold well in Germany and the band released Sternenflug - a German version of Starflight.
1981 saw the band touring extensively abroad, along with appearances on Old Grey Whistle Test and Rock Goes To College.
The album Batteries Not Included was the most polished release, and sadly the bands last release of new material. The singles did well in London, kept high in the Capital Radio phone votes, but the sales did not reflect this masterpiece.

This is a little tribute to one of my favourites dj's of the Spanish radio: Rafa Abitbol, to whom I was in the habit of listening every day, and that I was lucky to know personally years later.
The translate of title of the album is "Dynamite - 40 Better Songs of the Power Pop"
Rafa writes in the booklet:
"The POWER POP was the music that I had to live and that I chose to spread in my first days of Radio. I was lucky. I was in the right place (the breaker FM of Madrid, Spain, ONDA 2), in the perfect moment, with the ideal boss (the unrepeatable Jorge de Antón).
We create a program called "DINAMITA". It was an act of faith.
We were not alone in our particular crusade.
Special mention is deserved to the pioneers' missing programs of the FM as Gonzalo Garrido, Mario Armero or Manolo Fernández.
Among all we wanted to make jump over the airs the conformity and the boredom. We hadn't even idea of how obtaining it. But we leave ourselves to go for the heart and the thing worked.
It was wonderful to verify as those strangers that we were supporting unconditionally convert in artists of worship and they were using as inspiration a new generation of Spanish musicians.
The above mentioned should be small later the maximum protagonists of the Spanish Pop of the 80's.
"DINAMITA" was seven years in antenna. The people say that it broke molds. Maybe. The sure only thing for whom we were doing it day by day is that we were enjoying intensely. From the same way we hope that you enjoy this compilation of milestones of so mythical program.
The majority in those days were considered rare things.
Thanks to God, today they are Classics of Our Time."

This album is dedicated in memory of Jorge of Antón.

I only can put two objections to the album, it should have called "The 40 Better Songs Of The New Wave" and they aren't all those who are, there aren't they all those who are.

Come Out and Play - American Power Pop I (1975-78) does a nice job highlighting the various strains of the genre as it resurged during the late 70's in the US, from the jittery sounds of The Nerves, through the AOR of Earth Quake, punky Diodes, sugary sweet Pezband, and nerd-popper Chris Stamey. The disc provides plenty of impetus to crate dig in search of the generally semi-obscure and truly forgotten bands that make up the majority of the track list, that my only complaints come in the inclusion of the too-obvious Flamin' Groovies track "Shake Some Action" and A-listers Cheap Trick, a band anyone who picks up this set will already be familiar with (even if their killer "Southern Girls" totally fits the vibe), while Chris Bell's "I Am The Cosmos" is sorta a downer to close on. Otherwise, a solid comp ready for windows-down, summertime crusin'.

Ian Matthews - 1978 - Stealin' Home

Following two releases for Columbia, Stealin' Home is somewhat of a return to form for Ian Matthews. Recorded for Rockburgh Records in the U.K., and co-produced by Matthews, along with label owner and former cohort Sandy Roberton, the album veers away from the tepid jazz-tinged pop of its predecessor, continuing what seemed to be a natural progression that was hinted at with Some Days You Eat the Bear in 1974, and then to a greater degree with the lackluster Go for Broke two years later. The pop and light R&B of Go for Broke is more fully realized here, showing Matthews in a much more flattering light. Once again he chooses a handful of good covers, including songs by Robert Palmer, John Martyn, and Terence Boylan, to round out and complement his own material. It's a nice, pure pop treatment of Boylan's "Shake It," that gave Matthews his first Top 40 hit in over seven years (number 13), but it's a pair of pre-rock & roll numbers that are responsible for two of Stealin' Home's most inspired moments. A warm a cappela arrangement of Rogers and Hammerstein's "Carefully Taught," from the musical South Pacific, evokes both the beauty and depth of the song, while the interpolation of Richard Stekol's contemporary "Yank and Mary" with the old standard "Smile," has a sort of melancholy sweetness. Elsewhere, cuts such as Palmer's "Gimme an Inch," Boylan's "Don't Hang Up Your Dancing Shoes," and Martyn's "Man in the Station" are appealing enough, but seem a bit diluted when placed next to the original versions. Released by Mushroom Records in North America, Stealin' Home is still worth a listen.

Hi to all. Excuse me for the lack of posts. I've been unemployed the last four years; for that reason I had a lot of time for the blog, but three months ago I found a job and I was out of home all the day.
Little by little I'll try to put more in this small music corner.
Today I return with a request for my friend "el negro".
Ian had covered Folk, Country & Bluegrass on Nine Records between 1970-1974 and of those nine, "Matthews Southern Comfort" (1970), " If You Saw Thro' My Eyes" (1971), "Tigers Will Survive".(1972), "Valley Hi" (1973), and "Some Days You Eat the Bear" (1974) are Great Records that met with Good Critical Acclaim and Moderate Sales.
But by 1975 the Record Companies became the Record Industry and the Stakes became HUGE after the Release of "Fleetwood Mac" (1975) sold 7 Million Units. Rock Artists became PRODUCT and CBS Records signed Ian Matthews, and in a Corporate Board Room decided to Market as a POP STAR. And the reasoning behind this thinking was he was capable of BIG Pop Stardom. He had already had a Number One Hit with his Cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" in 1970 and in 1972 he had a Minor Chart Sucess with the Crystals classic "Do Doo Ron Ron". So the plan was pick a Cover Tune, Over-Arrange it and BINGO, Big Pop Star.
So here we are at "Go For Broke". It hit the shops in 1976 and surprise! Six out of the Ten Songs here are Cover Versions such as "Darkness, Darkness" (Youngbloods, 1969) , "Brown Eyed Girl" ( Van Morrison, 1967), "Just One Look", (Hollies, 1965) and even 'Groovin" ( Young Rascals, 1967). Sometimes it comes out fine (Brown Eyed Girl) Sometimes it doesn't ( Groovin' ). (PHILIP S WOLF wrote at amazon)

Split Enz was a successful New Zealand band during the late 1970s and the early 1980s featuring brothers Tim Finn and Neil Finn. They achieved success with the music charts in New Zealand, Australia and Canada during the early 1980s and built a cult following elsewhere. Their musical style was eclectic and original, incorporating influences from art rock, vaudeville, swing, punk, rock, New Wave and pop.... bla, bla, bla..
Everybody knows them.

This concert was recorded at Pinkpop Festival, Maastricht, Holland on November 23th, 1980.

Here I bring to you a Christmas gift courtesy of the great D. Moose (Thank you very much!).
Just after the brief Montage episode (one album still available on cd), the great Michael Brown of Left Banke fame formed his real second group: The Stories, who spent a few months charming audiences before releasing their first single "I'm Coming Home" for their first national hit.
Stories was formed with vocalist Ian Lloyd, guitarist Steve Love, and drummer Bryan Madey. Following the group's self-titled 1972 Kama Sutra label debut, the mercurial Brown abruptly resigned, at which point the remaining Stories recruited bassist Kenny Aaronson and pianist Ken Bichel to record 1973's About Us. "Brother Louie," a tale of interracial romance penned by Hot Chocolate's Errol Brown, hit number one that summer, but Stories never again returned to the Top 40. Brown, meanwhile, resurfaced in 1976, leading the short-lived Beckies before spending the following decades out of the limelight.
About Us" was the second Stories album but also the last recorded with Michael Brown.
The Stories would record a third album called "Traveling Underground" without Brown.
Michael Brown would later surfaced with The Beckies.
Michael Brown left the band and the new Stories went into the studio with former Music Connection magazine editor and producer of Gladys Knight, Kenny Kerner. He and Richie Wise recorded a song written by Errol Brown/Tony Wilson and released by their British band Hot Chocolate. Kama Sutra later put the 45 in the original pressing's sleeve before adding it as a 13th track on About Us. That unique Hot Chocolate song was a far cry from the Paul McCartney-ish pop of opening track "Darling" or closing track "What Comes After," and the hit song's production was a lot heavier than the light pop which was Michael Brown's trademark, something Ian Lloyd translated very nicely. This album is a live radio show that was broadcast on NY's WLIR in 1974. John Lightman takes over on bass as Andy Hummell left the band shortly after recording Radio City. Of interest is is a cover of Loudon Wainwright's "Motel Blues and the interview with Alex Chilton which gives a glimpse of his anger with the distribution problems of the Big Star LPs. The show was a favorite among bootleggers for many years.

"For a while in the history of music, the only way you'd ever have heard of Badfinger was to either have tuned in to the local oldies station, stumbled upon an old, worn-out copy of one of their albums in a relative's collection or to have paid upwards of $100 for said record in much nicer condition from a dealer. (I was lucky, and happened to find a copy of Straight Up in my uncle's records. I still have that record.)
The re-release of most of Badfinger's catalog while on Apple helped to stir up some interest in the band (as well as the ghosts of the suicides of members Pete Ham in 1975 and Tom Evans in 1983), but after that, it again seemed like Badfinger was destined for the deepest realms of the vaults of obscurity.
With the recent release of BBC In Concert 1972-3, that just might change. These 15 tracks capture the band at the highest pinnacle of their career, and you can almost feel the glow coming through your speakers. Even in the rare shaky moment or two, Badfinger will quickly make you wonder why you haven't heard more from these guys.
The first half of the disc, taken from a June 1972 concert, inexplicably includes two Dave Mason covers. Granted, they do a killer version of "Only You Know And I Know" and a passable job on "Feelin' Alright" - one of the few classic rock songs I can think of that gets worse the more I hear it. But, come on ! They were working their Straight Up album at this time! Where's "Baby Blue"? Where's "Day By Day"? Where's "No Matter What" from No Dice? If any collection screamed for the definitive live versions of these tracks, BBC In Concert 1972-3 is it.
That being said, the songs selected for this part of the album are impeccable. "Better Days" is a wonderful start to the show, and two tracks from Straight Up that normally don't get attention, "Take It All" and "Suitcase", are given the chance to show their true glory. (Another version of "Suitcase" shows up in the next part of the disc.)
The second half of the CD (except for one track) features Badfinger at the same concert hall (London's Paris Theatre) in August 1973. Musically, Badfinger sounded a little shaky at times - check out the uncertainty on songs like "Love Is Easy" - and the band was in the midst of switching from Apple to Warner Brothers. Regrettably, the two CDs from this time are out of print, so unless you bought Ass (the only Apple release I believe that didn't get reissued) or Badfinger, chances are you're hearing most of these cuts for the first time. And if first impressions mean anything, the performances are decent but the material isn't anything to write home about.
Still, it's the performances of guitarist Joey Molland, guitarist Ham, bassist Evans and drummer Mike Gibbons that sells this set, and it's more than enough to carry the songs through. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the album's closer, a 1970 "Top Of The Pops" version of their debut hit "Come And Get It," which occasionally sounds out of tune. (C'mon, guys, you're telling me with the vastness of the BBC's tape library, a better live version of this song doesn't exist? My arse.)
If there were any justice in this world, BBC In Concert 1972-3 would signal a rebirth of interest in a band who unjustly were compared to the Beatles for most of their career. If this disc does anything, it proves just how good and multi-faceted Badfinger were live, and this should be a welcome addition to your collection. Boomerang was Shoes 3rd major-label release and demonstrates Shoes knack for creating melodic, guitar-based pop/rock songs. Recorded at Chicago's CRC (Chicago Recording Company) in the spring of 1982 the songs here range from upbeat to moody to lush, vocal landscapes with Shoes' underlying core of guitar riffs and punchy bass lines. The opening track, In Her Shadow was made into an impromptu, "unofficial" video from an appearance on a Madison, Wisconsin television show in response to MTV's request for a new video from the band. Badfinger released a number of highly praised albums on the Apple and Warner Bros. labels. But the original band never released a live album during its time together, and DAY AFTER DAY is a long-overdue document of the original Badfinger's in-concert power.
Includes two of Badfinger's greatest hits, "Day After Day," and "Baby Blue," along with many highlights of the Apple albums. Recorded in 1974 at the Cleveland Agora, the album captures Badfinger's last tour featuring all four original members: guitarists Joey Molland and Pete Ham, bassist Mike Gibbins, and drummer Tom Evans.
SHINE ON is a 12-track British compilation of Badfinger's two Warner Bros. albums, containing eight songs from Badfinger and four from Wish You Were Here, both originally released in 1974. None of the band's classic tracks are to be found here, but this set demonstrates that even in decline Badfinger could make some enjoyable music. "Lonely You," for example, is a ballad very much in the tradition of earlier Badfinger love songs, while "Andy Norris" is one of their more stirring rockers.
The Ass album was the last one they did for the Apple label before moving to Warner Brothers for two ill-fated records. COMPLETE ASS collects 37 tracks from the sessions for that record including a the 10 track original album in different sound than the reissue. There are demos ("Piano Red" is the highlight as it sounds better in this stripped down form than in the two band outtakes included on the second disc), Mike Gibbons Welsh recordings ("For So Long" is great), alternate versions of album songs (including a piano driven version of the opus "Timeless") and outtakes (three versions of "Regular" anybody?). There are four versions of ! the outtake "Do You Mind" which turned up on the Apple CD reissue and to these ears, the wrong version was chosen. Track 17 should have been the keeper with sharper guitar and an appealing organ break "Coppertone Blues" is a backing track that went nowhere while "Rock And Roll" is a Tom Evans rocker with lame lyrics, but great instrumental toughness that deserved to be worked out more. "Dreaming" was also a track deserving more attention (if only to lose the harmonica which ruins an otherwise excellent Joey Molland rocker). Admittedly, yours' truly would buy an album to hear anything associated with this band, but if you are a fan then you need this two cd set.
APPLE DEMOS 1970-72 is the first version of Badfinger's Straight Up album rejected by Apple. Not demos but an alternate album.

It contained new material. Issued in January 1981 on Radio Records, the LP was the second and last attempt by Tom Evans and Joey Molland to recapture Badfinger's earlier market success, which was lost after the death of band founder Pete Ham in 1975. The album was recorded in Miami, FL by Evans, Molland, keyboardist Tony Kaye (formerly of Yes), guitarist Glen Sherba and drummer Richard Bryans and was co-produced by Jack Richardson.
Rockier than its predecessor Airwaves, this final outing by Badfinger produced one semi-successful single with the song "Hold On," which reached #56 on U.S. Billboard charts in 1981. The album peaked at only #155 in the US Billboard charts.

Badfinger: Discography Part Two (1974 / 1979)

Six weeks after the Ass sessions were completed, Badfinger entered the studio to begin recording material for their first Warner Brothers release titled Badfinger (the intended title, For Love Or Money, was excluded from the album pressings).
Ass and Badfinger were released almost simultaneously and the accompanying singles from Badfinger, "Love Is Easy" (UK) and "I Miss You" (U.S.), were unsuccessful. Badfinger did manage to retain some U.S. fan support as a result of several American tours. One concert at the Cleveland Agora on March 4, 1974 was recorded on 16-track tape for a possible live album release, although the performance was deemed unsatisfactory at the time.
Following the American tours, Badfinger recorded Wish You Were Here at the Caribou Ranch recording studio in Colorado and AIR Studios in London.
The album was extremely well-received by Rolling Stone and other periodicals upon its release in October 1974.....
With Molland gone and an increasingly unstable situation overall, Polley's next ploy was to press the band to go back into Apple Recording Studios to record its third album under the Warner contract, instead of a U.S. support tour. Within two weeks, tracks were cut for an album entitled Head First, and rough mixes were distributed to the musicians and Warner Brothers Records in America. Before the album was formally accepted by Warners Records, Warners Publishing had already filed a lawsuit against Stan Polley and Badfinger on December 10, 1974 in L.A. Superior Court. Polley had hoped submitting the Head First tapes would secure at least one more album advance prior to the litigation, but Warner Brothers refused to accept the tapes and never paid for the sessions. The legal action led to Warners Records stopping the promotion of Wish You Were Here and they stopped distribution of Wish You Were Here worldwide, thus completely halting Badfinger's career.

In October 1969, while the release of "Come and Get It" was pending, the band and Apple Records agreed that a name change was critical. "The Iveys" were still sometimes confused with "The Ivy League", and the name was considered too trite for the current music scene. After much debate, the group changed their name to Badfinger. Other suggestions had included: "The Glass Onion," "The Prix", and "The Cagneys" from John Lennon, and "Home" by Paul McCartney.
The name "Badfinger" was suggested by Apple's Neil Aspinall as a reference to "Bad Finger Boogie", an early working title of Lennon's "With a Little Help from My Friends", so-called because Lennon had composed the melody on a piano using his middle finger, after having hurt his forefinger.

The Iveys (1969): Maybe Tomorrow + Someday We'll Be Known (1968 Demos)

Maybe Tomorrow was the only official album released by The Iveys (who later called themselves Badfinger). It was issued in 1969 on the Apple label in Japan, West Germany and Italy. Although the album was scheduled to be released worldwide, the release in the U.S. and the U.K. at that time was halted without explanation. Many reasons for halting the album have been suggested by the band and Apple employees, but the most common theory is that Apple's newly-hired president, Allen Klein, stopped all non-Beatle releases on Apple until he could examine the company's finances, which were in disarray at the time.
A majority of the album's songs were later issued as Badfinger songs on the Badfinger album Magic Christian Music.

The Textones - 1990 - Back In Time

BACK IN TIME consists of fourteen previously unreleased studio tracks that were recorded from 1979-1988.
Trying To Hold On is an alternate mix of a song from Carla's recorded-In-Sweden solo album. This version features saxophone where the original featured harmonica.
Clarence Carter's Slip Away and Bob Marley's Redemption Song were cut as part of a " lay down all the tunes you know session". These are two of my personal favorites from that day.
Smokey Robinson once sang his classic I Second That Emotion with The Textones, unfortunately the tape recorder was not on. But this live-in-the-studio bluesy take is quite special nonetheless.
Through The Canyon lent it's name to the most recent American Textones LP. This is from a different session than the verion that appeared on that album.
In 1985 the band cut six songs with drummer Phil Seymour on lead vocals. Two showed up on the THROUGH THE CANYON album and here's three more, including this collection's title cut.
Gene Clark also recorded with the group that year . One cut, Lover's Turnaround, was the bonus track on the Gene Clark/Carla Olson CD SO REBELLIOUS A LOVER (Demon Records, 1987). Another tune turned up as a Bucketful Of Brains flexl-disc. And here's Jokers Are Wild,
In 1980 The Textones released a 45 on IRS Records' subsidiary Faulty Products. An outtake from the sessions that produced the single is heard here for the first time, If I Could Be.
We Don't Get Along is the earliest recording herein. It was wlltten by Kathy Valenllne who later re-recorded the song with her next band, The GO-GO's. It also appeared on Phil Seymour's album debut in 1981.
Lastly we have Standing In The line, a song whose social and ecological message still warrants a listen. This is an earlier version of what would be the lead track on The Textones' A&M album MIDNIGHT MISSION, which was released In 1984. happy listening. Saul Davis, December, 1989

The Armoury Show: Waiting For The Flood + Live In Essen (1985)

"That the group's music shows similarities to the group Big Country most likely has to do with the fact that Richard Jobson, the singer from The Armoury Show, earlier played together with Stuart Adamson, the singer from Big Country, in a group called Skids. If you've ever seen The Armoury Show play in their hometown of Edingurgh in Scotland, then you can understand that they are a typical Scottish phenomenon: The English is harder, but the contact with the public is more quiet and not so hectic, nevertheless direct.
After a concert, the musicians still sit in the foyer with their fans. The big drums and the 'big' sound are trademarks of the group, similar to Big Country. Sometimes the singer, Richard Jobson, looks like a boxer and reminds one of Muhammed Ali. The creative tension comes from his texts and the music from guitarist, John McGeoch, who also left his mark on the different sound of Siouxsie and the Banshees. For a while, McGeoch was also a member of the group, Magazin, and belonged to the top class of guitarists of the new generation after 1976. The function of bass player, Russell Webb, as a singer, is important. With his clear, high voice, he sings all the second parts.
The group's goal is to carry through positive energy, which they themselves embody. What this is all about, is told by Richard Jobson announcement to 'Avalanche': He'd rather be a boxer, even when that means getting hit on the nose once in a while instead of always remaining the same, the way you normally do." Magi - 1976 - Win Or Lose

This north Indiana outfit ruled the roost in the 'Michiana' region in the mid-'70s, attracting huge crowds whenever they played live. Often compared with Led Zeppelin, this 5-piece outfit rocked the area with a tight and raw sound that combined in-your-face hard rock with undisguised psychedelic tendencies and lashings of fuzz. It must be said the boys didn't do themselves any favours by issuing their only known album with a cover reminiscent of a Journey photo shoot, but regardless of their dubious hair and sense of dress, Magi certainly deserved more than the obscurity into which they ultimately lapsed. During his long and prolific musical career, Tom Stevens has recorded over a dozen albums, both solo and with Magi, The Long Ryders, Danny & Dusty, Chris Cacavas and Junk Yard Love and Jack Waterson. As a solo artist his blistering guitar playing and depth of songwriting speak volumes, both on stage and in the studio on Stevens' three solo albums: Another Room, Points Revisited (originally the mini-lp called Points Of View with different versions of 'Telephone' y 'Friend or Fow'), and his latest release, Home.
hile still a teenager in Indiana, infatuated with 60s garage and hard-edged rock and roll, he joined regional heroes Magi, a dual-guitar, kick-ass rock and roll band. When Magi packed their gear and moved west to Los Angeles, they found their angle had gone out of style, replaced by the vibrant punk energy of Black Flag and X. As other band members moved home, Stevens stayed in Hollywood, absorbing the raw sounds and urban sensibilities of the L.A. musical landscape. It was during this period, in between working his shifts at the legendary Tower Records on the Sunset Strip, that Tom first began seriously writing songs.
Taking a cue from the thriving DIY punk scene around him, with the help of some friends, he took those songs and produced a six-song EP on Pulse Records, 1981's Points of View, which eventually sold out its’ original pressing and started him on a solo career. This was quickly side-tracked as a fateful series of events one day led him to join the soon to be legendary roots-rock godfathers, The Long Ryders, in late 1983.
During his 3-1/2 years as a Long Ryder, Stevens saw the release of three albums (all featuring Stevens-penned songs)-Native Sons, State of Our Union and Two Fisted Tales as well as lengthy worldwide tours, many international magazine covers, a UK top 40 hit ("Looking For Lewis & Clark"), long runs on European and U.S music charts, and several live TV appearances.
Stevens was also a member of the legendary Danny & Dusty, whose album The Lost Weekend made the year-end top ten best albums list in the New York Times. Additionally, he played with Gene Clark of The Byrds-as a stand-up bass player with Clark on a few of his last live L.A. performances. (Tom Stevens site)

Tyla Gang - 1975 - Blow You Out

Sean Tyla established his reputation with Geno Washington (And The Ram Jam Band) and pianist Freddie "Fingers" Lee. Between 1972-75 he led Ducks Deluxe, a tough R&B band which was at the fore front of the UK pre-punk, pub rock scene, and highly popular in France. However, the lack of commercial success doomed the band to a premature demise, following which Tyla formed the Tyla Gang: Bruce Irvine (guitar), Mike Desmarais (drums, ex-Winkies), and Peter O'Sullivan (bass). The band were one of the first acts signed to Stiff Records releasing the lone single "Styrofoam" in 1976 before completing Yachtless and Moonproof for the US-based Beserkley Records label. O'Sullivan was replaced by Brian Turrington (ex-Winkies) on the former, who in turn made way for Ken Whaley (bass, ex-Help Yourself).

The Textones: Midnight Mission (1987) + Through The Canyon (1989)

Along with Kathy Valentine, Carla Olson formed the Textones in the early '80s for a few singles on IRS. The band's major-label debut, "Midnight Mission" included help from Don Henley, Ry Cooder, Barry Goldberg, and Gene Clark. "Cedar Creek" (available at Sons Of The Dolls Blog), the band's second album, appeared in 1987 on Enigma Records. (Taken from Power Pop Criminal$ Blog)
"Through The Canyon" spans from 1980 for a first single with Kathy Valentine on to 1985 when the band backed Gene Clark for the straight-ahead Clark country of "Day for Night" and finally 1986 when the band cut what proved to be an excellent demo version of "The Drifter." That same year, Olson would be out of the Textones and sharing the stage with Clark taking "The Drifter" with her. Most of the lead vocals are handled by Olson except for 1980's "Can't Stop the World" (Kathy Valentine) and a handful of tunes sung by drummer Phil Seymour.

Formed by two ex-members of Ducks Deluxe (singers, songwriters, multi-ins- trumentalists and Andy McMaster / Nick Garvey) plus two younger pub vets (Bram Tchaikovsky and Ricky Slaughter), the Motors seemed like a hit machine from the outset. On record, they made grandiose rock-pop — wide-screen, brilliantly arranged and energetically performed — drawing on their longtime experience and solid talents.
Motors 1, produced by future metal maven Robert John Lange, is a fresh, exciting record, solidly rooted in electric guitars but light-years more subtle and three-dimensional than the rock'n'roll retreads the band's members had been playing prior to the Motors. While the six-minute "Dancing the Night Away" is an engrossing and muscular lead-off track, nothing else that follows it on the album is quite as striking. Approved By is a better effort, containing the fruits of the Motors' attack on the singles chart ("Airport" and "Forget About You" both went Top 20 in the UK) and exhibiting all of the band's strengths: catchy melodies, inventive arrangements and exciting, energetic use of rock instrumentation.
The Motors effectively disbanded after the second album. Garvey and McMaster continued working together using the group name, eventually engaging Jimmy Iovine to produce their next album in New York. Tenement Steps, the unfortunate result of far too much time spent in the studio, is an appalling, overblown mess, reeking of self-indulgence and artistic confusion. The chorus of the best-known track, "Love and Loneliness," sounds exactly like Steve Stills' "Love the One You're With" — and that's as good as the record gets.
Greatest Hits has all of the above-mentioned songs as well as the rest of the Motors' best work. Neophytes would do well to start (and end) here. [Ira Robbins/Jim Green -Trouser Press ]

"I know this Jules Shear album is fetching high prices on some auction sites - sometimes around $95 !!!!!, but who would like to pay that much. Anyway, you'll get the vinyl rip, i mean you won't get the bonus track available on the japanese 1992 reissue - that bonus song (When Love Surges) is crap and not really interesting anyway.
So , you'll get the album for free, but also the artwork - who wants more ? (I've also included the lyrics and the inner pic of the original vivyl album)
This 1983 "Watch Dog" album produced by Todd Rundgren was the first solo Jules Shear release after the Jules & The Polar Pears band breakup.
This album, but also the next one "The Eternal Return" received critical acclaim, but few sales. He was then dropped by his label (EMI).

"2 years after the Watch Dog album, Jules Shear released "The Eternal Return" and again received critical acclaim, but few sales. He Was then dropped by his label (EMI). As AMG says "hear again produces a slick pop delight in The Eternal Return (produced by Bill Drescher & Jules Shear). Shear explores a more soulful side in songs like "Steady" and the yearning "You're Not Around" while perfecting his hook-laden melodies. Despite being perfectly in line with the mid-'80s sound, this one also slipped through the cracks. The Bangles would later find a hit in the leadoff track, "If She Knew What She Wants." Just listen to the duet with Pal Shazar Here s/he Comes - it's pure delight. ..... Though he's never been able to record a hit of his own, singer/songwriter Jules Shear has recorded several albums of highly accessible, hit-worthy material, and as a testiment to his abilities, he's penned hits for others including "All Through the Night" for Cyndi Lauper and "If She Knew She What She Wants" for the Bangles.
Born in Pittsburg, Shear began writing songs as a teenager. He relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-'70s, joining his first band, a typically laidback combo called the Funky Kings. The band released one album for Arista in 1976. While "Slow Dancing" from the album (written by Jack Tempchin) would later be hit for Johnny Rivers, the three Shear songs were clearly the highlights of the album. Shear left the following year to form his own group, Jules & the Polar Bears, who released two critically acclaimed, though commercially overlooked, albums for Columbia. When a third album was rejected by the label, Shear forged on as a solo artist.
Unplug This collected solo performances, mostly new acoustic versions of songs Shear had previously recorded.

Alone With Jim Basnight

Hi Jim, thanks you for your present. You're coming from Seattle, WA, but we want to know something more about you.

Blog Kihn: Where did you grow up?

JB: I grew up in Seattle in the USA. I was born back east in Philadelphia and spent the first few years of my life there and in NYC. I went to school in Seattle and got my start musically there, though I left at the age of 19 (1977) to spend six very important months in Manhattan, which was a very important time in my life and in my musical development.

BK: Was there music around the household?

JB: My parents were very musical though neither really played much. There were a lot of songs and records in our house early on. My dad always liked to sing songs and tell jokes. His humor was very influenced by Lenny Bruce and Brecht and his musical tastes varied from French Pop (he was a Francophile), jazz (Goodman, Ellington, Hampton, etc.), folk (Peter, Paul and Mary, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger) and a bit of country (Roger Miller, Roy Orbison and Jimmy Rodgers). My mom was more into rock and roll like the Watusi, Bobbies Girl, the Twist, Elvis and the pop of the time.

BK: When you were young you knew that you would be musician?

JB: I was sure that I wanted to be a musician when I started to write songs in late 1975, when I formed a band called the Meyce with a couple of guys that were also doing a rock fanzine with me that was called Chatterbox. The Meyce also featured Jennie Skirvin on vocals early on and toward the end Pam Lillig on guitar. My first songs were very complex, but very expressive. As I developed I started writing simpler stuff and more rock and roll, punk and power-pop. Those early Meyce tunes were very jazzy and folk influenced, yet with a ton of rock and punk energy and I have always retained some of those roots.

BK: Who were your early influences musically?

JB: My first records were the Beatles 'Revolver' and The Mothers 'Absolutely Free'. I was very moved by the Kinks and I would say that they were my favorite band of that era, though I was also very influenced by the Beatles, Stones, Who, Raiders, Grassroots, Box Tops, Buckinghams, Standells, Rascals, Hollies, Them, Yardbirds, Motown, Stax-Volt, the NW Sound of the Sonics and the Wailers and the early psychedelic sound of bands like the Electric Prunes, the Byrds, the Jefferson Airplane and the Doors. Jimi Hendrix, Creedence and Cream became instant favorites of mine when they came out. I moved away from Pop music during the period between the deaths of Jimi, Janis, etc. and the birth of glam, but I really came back strong with my interest in music then. Bowie, Bolan, Lou Reed, The Dolls, Iggy, Alice Cooper, Mott, Slade, Roxy Music and the rest were an even bigger influence and inspiration to me than the 60's and really is what led me to start writing my own songs. During this whole platform and bellbottom era I also had a strong love for Soul music like Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Smokey Robinson, Bill Withers, Ohio Players and Parliament as well as earlier soul artists like the Temptations, James Brown, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. When David Bowie went soul it alienated most of my glam rock friends, but I was really into it and I would say that it really validated and enhanced my appreciation for it. As much as I loved the soul of the 60's and early 70's, I never liked the disco movement or any subsequent dance music like techno, though I did like early rap, especially the more clever aspects of its lyrics. I've always liked the power-pop sound of the 70's acts that predate the term. Bands like Badfinger, Big Star and the Raspberries. I would say that I was influenced by the early punk rock of the mid to later 70's, but I also feel that my music was more part of that than influenced by it, despite the fact that most people outside of Seattle and a few hard core music fans around the world ever heard it.

BK: When did you start with The Moberlys?

JB: The Moberlys started in 1978. Our first line-up was Steve Grindle on bass, Bill Walters on drums and Jeff Cerar on guitar. Jeff later formed the legendary Cowboys with future Rockingham bassist Jack Hanan, the late great singer Ian Fisher and drummer Dean Helgeson, who also died young and was in a high school band of mine pre-Meyce called the Lovaboys. Jeff was replaced by Steve Pearson and later Don Short who immediately after went on to team up to form the Heats. A Seattle 'indie' label, Chuckie Boy Records released albums compiling much of both the Heats and the Cowboys great works about 10 years ago and I would recommend both to any fans of rock and power-pop. Ernie Sapiro finally settled in as the Moberlys second guitarist and he played skillfully on most of the tracks on 'Sexteen' though Jeff played on a few. 'Sexteen', originally released on CD by the German Bear Family/ATM label in 1996 is a compilation of tracks from that band and that era. After that band fell apart after being rejected by a few major labels in the wake of the decline of the promise that the Knack and other LA pop bands had left the music business much less enthused about power-pop or anything that resembled it. I released 'The Moberlys' LP after the band had broken up and joined a band called the Pins in which I was able to save the money to move to NYC in the fall of 1980. The Pins later became Steve Pearson's post Heats band the Rangehoods, also a source of great tunes and a recommended selection for fans of power-pop, especially the country tinged side. I went to NYC and formed another version of the Moberlys on the heels of the underground critical success of the LP. That band featured Jeremy Bar-Illan on guitar and Greg Morongell on bass, whose cousin Mike later helped produce 'Pop Top'. After playing around NY, infiltrating the scene and flirting with a few labels, I went back to Seattle in early 1984 and formed a band with Dave Drewry, who had also played with us in NY. That band featured Glenn Oyabe on guitar and Toby Kiel on bass and stayed together all the way to the end of the band in 1989. We recorded a ton of stuff in LA, as well as quite a bit in Vancouver BC, before relocating to LA in 1985. I packaged tracks from those sessions as well as some stuff that Drewry and I had recorded in NY with Jeremy and another Seattle kid, bass player Al Bloch, to make the 'Seattle-NY-LA' CD for the French Pop the Balloon label in 2001.

BK: At that time what was the style of the music?

JB: The Moberlys in '78 and '79 were straight up all over the map. I would say that the band could be favorably compared to The Modern Lovers, the Heartbreakers, the Flaming Groovies, Television, the early Talking Heads and Richard Hell, but with a heavy nod to the British and American 60's pop sounds.

BK: How is your way to make a song?

JB: I have written songs so many ways. Sometimes it's been by writing a melody or an instrumental song and writing words to it. Sometimes it's been writing lyrics and then composing music around them. Sometimes it's been finishing someone else's ideas and sometimes it's been someone else finishing mine. I've been blessed to work with some very great writers like the late Ben Fisher (who I wrote 'Summertime Again' and 'Hello Mary Jane' and other with), the late Bruce Paskow ('Lattes' and 'Rock and Roll Girlfriend'), Joey Alkes (who wrote 'Million Miles Away' with Peter Case), Mike Czekaj (former Fuzztone), Tommy Knight ('Opportunity Knocks') and band mates like Jack Hanan, Jim Knodle and some of the Moberlys guys.

BK: In the 90's you played with the Rockinghams and solo throughout, talk us about that time.

JB: It was a great band. Jack and Criss Crass and I did some great shows and made some fantastic recordings. It was really a drag that the Seattle music business at the time was so unwilling to help us out. We had all been very supportive to the very same scene there in the 80's, but for reasons that I will never quite understand the folks that gained success in the 90's did not do anything to help advance us. Luckily Not Lame and a few labels in the world of power-pop like Paul Collins and Munster in Spain released some of our stuff. Not Lame released 'Makin' Bacon' in 1999, after the band had really stopped gigging and we had all moved on to other things, in my case 'The Jim Basnight Thing' which resulted in that CD release in 1998. The Rockinghams really rocked and popped in a tongue in cheek fashion, though with more real rock and roll and power-pop conviction than most bands of both of those categories. Criss deserves a lot of credit for the passion. His drumming was remarkable and he deserves to be credited as not just the drummer, but as a huge part of the style and force of the band.

BK: The Moberly was a Power Pop band, Angelo from Power Pop Criminal$ Blog defined Power Pop like "raw rock & roll with la la's..."... Which is your definition of "Power Pop"?

JB: Power-Pop is one or two guitars, bass and drums, occasionally another instrument on the odd track, but rarely live. It is pop with punk or garage influence performed with crunchy guitars and a lot of testosterone. There are vocal harmonies that tend to be on the "twangy" side and guitar solos that are composed like George Harrison and Keith Richard, but delivered like Johnny Thunders or Link Wray. The most 'power-pop' CD that I ever put out is 'Seattle-NY-LA' by Jim Basnight and the Moberlys, but The Rockinghams 'Makin' Bacon' has a lot of that style as well, mixed with more punk influence.

BK: Olympia is the capital city of the Washington State, Aberdeen the city of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, Is Seattle the city of the Power Pop in the Evergreen State?

JB: It certainly isn't Olympia, Aberdeen or Tacoma the home of the Sonics and the Wailers. I like the question, but I would say that power-pop doesn't have a capital in Washington. The best power-pop band ever from this state was The Heats, so Kenmore, where Steve Pearson grew up is probably the capital of power-pop.

BK: The circle of the Power Pop sound arises every 20 years, the 60's were the explosion of the "beat", the 80's were marked by the New Wave, in the year 2000 and now there are great Power Pop bands, do you think that in the year 2040 our grandsons will listen this kind of music?

JB: Yes I do. If you are not moved by a great pop melody, a crunchy and/or "jangly" guitar, harmonies and a relentless rhythm section pushing the beat you are dead. Prior to big amps there were a ton of songs that had components of that. Some of my favorites were 'Look Through Any Window' by the Hollies, 'Tonight' by the Raspberries, 'Baby Blue' by Badfinger, 'Here Comes My Baby' by the Tremeloes', 'Glad All Over' or 'Anyway You Want It' by the Dave Clark 5 and '1-2-3' by Len Barry.

BK: I know "blogs" like Seattle Powerpop and the local bands posted there, but, for a musician like you, how is the Seattle scene now?

JB: The Seattle Scene is good. There will always be kids that love music and rock and roll trying to find their voice here. It's just something about the rain and the fresh air that enhances a fertile musical and creative mind.

BK: Which groups, musicians are your favorites?

JB: I'm afraid that because of my gig schedule over the past 10 years that I have missed out on a lot of new bands. I have been told that I would like a number of them, but I really haven't heard much. A friend of mine named Willie Crane is starting a new local music "mag" and I may start writing some stuff for it. Maybe in the process get acquainted with some new bands.

BK: This summer you have played over 4 shows a week. Do you have the same feeling as the first time you played?

JB: Not really, but probably more so than many would think. When I go onstage I feel like it's the front lines like the D-Day invasion. Either you are conciliatory and accept the fact that you somewhere in the rear supporting the action or you act like it's the most important moment of the battle. I strive to do the latter, without losing track of the context.

BK: Your new album "We Rocked and Rolled: The First 25 Years with Jim Basnight, Moberlys and Beyond" has selections from all 6 of your unique CD's, 'Sexteen' by the Moberlys, 'Seattle-NY-LA' by Jim Basnight and the Moberlys, 'Pop Top', 'The Jim Basnight Thing' and 'Recovery Room' by Jim Basnight and 'Makin' Bacon' by the Rockinghams. Your late album "Recovery Room" was released in 2004, Have we soon an album with new songs?

JB: I've never released 'Recovery Room' other than copies that I've sold at gigs. I recently added the two new tracks that the band recorded in April for 'We Rocked and Rolled' to it, for the next addition, when I run out of stock of the last one that I pressed in 2004, which has been repressed a few times. I am in the process of putting out a DVD that will have a set of songs from the current band with footage from throughout my career, including some 8mm footage of the Meyce opening for the Ramones in Seattle in 1977 and a lot of great stills, some narration and interview footage. I am also planning to include a CD of the best of the 100 or so tracks that I have in the can that haven't been released. Some of those are really good and probably should have been released before. I'm going to choose those based on what stands the test of time and it's going to be really good. As far as brand new songs, my plan is to start looking at that after these projects (the DVD/CD set and 'We Rocked and 'Rolled') are completed. I am not worried about the next set of songs. I've written over 500 songs and I think I can write some more.

BK: Finally, when you'll do a tour in Europe?

JB: My sincere hope is that this band can go there after we release those two projects. Until then my focus is solidly on getting those done, but going to Europe and Japan is high on my list of priorities. It's high time that I get to see those places and get to meet people that have been enjoying this music for a long time.

In 1988 a year after they had fallen apart, loved by a hard-core legion of fans who had supported them up and down the country and across Europe, the Prisoners released "Rare And Unissued" on Billy Childish's Hangman label.
Rare & Unissued rebalances the scales a bit, with several songs rescued from the last LP but done in more traditional Prisoner style, surrounded by noise and trash and ephemera.

Ian Gomm is probably best-known for the time he spent in premier pub rock band Brinsley Schwarz. Together with fellow band members Nick Lowe, Billy Rankin, Bob Andrews and Brinsley Schwarz himself he contributed to a series of excellent albums.
After that band's split in 1975 Ian retreated to the Welsh countryside and helped build and run Foel Studios. This also gave him a wonderful opportunity to try out his new songs with months of free studio time.
While his former colleagues found fame and fortune elsewhere (Nick Lowe becoming a solo artist and sought-after producer and Bob Andrews joining Graham Parker in the Rumour) Ian Gomm busied himself on his first solo album - 'Summer Holiday' which - for the US market was renamed 'Gomm With The Wind' and spawned a hit single in 'Hold On'.
The hastily-convened Ian Gomm Band then toured the States as support to Dire Straits and the live concert recorded in San Francisco in October 1979 picks up on the band's U.S. legacy, and includes Top 40 hit 'Hold On'.

"This new wave band from Philadelphia, US, recorded two albums for Arista Records in 1979 and 1981 and one e.p. for their own label in 1982. The group consisted of singer Richard Bush, his songwriting partner Rocco Notte (keyboards), Rick DiFonzo (guitar), Terry Bortman (bass) and Mike Snyder (drums). The A's built a reputation on the east coast club scene with a strong power pop sound and an energetic, goodtime stage show. Their self-titled debut album was praised by Rolling Stone but failed to excite the record-buying public. It was produced by Rick Cherttoff and opened with the instantly memorable "After Last Night," which Clarence Clemons covered fine. "C.I.A." and "Teenage Jerk Off" still ring true too. The follow-up, A Woman's Got The Power, produced by Nick Garvey of the Motors, found the band taking a more serious approach and reached the lower rungs of the US album chart. It led off the sophomore album with a mighty hook. "Heart of America" and "Johnny Silent" both packed wallops.
But even with all the right moves, the A's never quite caught on beyond Philadelphia. Singer Richard Bush has dozens of great unrecorded songs nobody's heard since then. Rick Di Fonzo and Rocco Notte have both done some serious sessions in the after-years."

The three-piece act the Graces was a project put together by Go-Gos guitarist Charlotte Caffey, following that band's mid-'80s breakup. Formed in 1988, Caffey was joined by Meredith Brooks and Gia Ciambotti, and the trio was inked to a deal with A&M Records. Their debut, A Perfect View, was released in 1989 to generally positive reviews, although it only managed a modest hit with the single "Lay Down Your Arms." In early 1991, the Graces were dropped from their label and Brooks left to pursue a solo career (and would ultimately land a number two smash with "Bitch" in 1998). Guitarist Chrissy Shefts, who had played in Go-Go drummer Gina Schock's House of Schock, took her place and the band continued to tour. The Prisoners was a mod revival band formed in 1982 in Chatham, Kent, England. Their 1960s garage sound made them a regular live fixture in London's "psychedelic revival" mini-scene of the early 1980s, and they often toured with sparring partners The Milkshakes, who included Billy Childish on guitar. The Prisoners' sound combined catchy, retro-flavoured melodies, punky guitar riffs, a Steve Marriott-esque vocal style and a lead instrument of the then-unfashionable Hammond organ. The Prisoners never met with much commercial success during their original lifespan but have latterly been likened to Paul Weller and The Charlatans. Indeed Tim Burgess of the Charlatans has cited the Prisoners as a major influence.
After releasing several self-financed records and spending a year with Big Beat Records, in 1985 the Prisoners signed a new management deal with Acid Jazz that saw them move away from the London garage band tag and instead directly into the Mod revival mainstream. They also made a patchy final album, "In From The Cold", for the ailing Stiff Records label. These deal were unsuccessful and the band split up acrimoniously in 1986. They have however reformed for live shows several times since then, and managed to release a final one-off single in 1997.
Since splitting up the members of The Prisoners have featured in a wide range of bands. James Taylor and Allan Crockford formed mainstream jazz funk band the James Taylor Quartet in 1986, although Allan Crockford is no longer part of their line-up. The Solarflares, who released four albums before splitting up in 2004, were Graham Day and Allan Crockford basically reprising The Prisoners sound along with drummer Simon "Wolf" Howard and Mr Parsley on organ. Other bands who have featured former members of The Prisoners are Planet, The Buff Medways, The Prime Movers, Thee Mighty Caesars and The Stabilisers . Presently Day fronts Graham Day & the Gaolers, who released their first album, Soundtrack to the Daily Grind, in November 2007.

The band's lineup was: Graham Day (vocals and guitar), Jamie/James Taylor (hammond organ), Allan Crockford (bass) and Johnny Symons (drums).

The Stones cover "Wild Horses" was only included in the US print of their album "Blind". The song was used as the last dance song at the Prom in the popular '90s TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was also featured on the first released soundtrack for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in the movie Fear with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg during the roller coaster ride.

After the demise of the Dwight Twilley Band, Twilley continued as a solo act, keeping Pitcock on lead guitar and adding Susan Cowsill on harmony vocals. This lineup released the album Twilley for Shelter/Arista in 1979, although the album's most successful song, "Darlin'", featured backing vocals by Seymour. His next album, "Blueprint", co-produced by Jack Nitzsche, was rejected by Arista after the failure of the 1980 single "Somebody to Love" (and Nitzsche's scandalous divorce from wife Carrie Snodgress), although it was assigned an Arista release number. "Blueprint" ultimately was never released, keeping Twilley out of circulation until his Shelter contract expired at the end of 1981.
He then moved to EMI America for Scuba Divers (1982), a combination of rejected Blueprint tracks and new material. His follow-up album, Jungle (1984), produced his second national hit single, "Girls", featuring a counterpoint vocal by Petty, which also reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up single, "Little Bit Of Love", reached #77. Jungle has never neen released in cd format. Unfortunately, Twilley left EMI America at that point, which once again dissipated his momentum from the hit. Twilley's 1986 album "Wild Dogs" was recorded for Private I Records, a custom label run by independent radio promoter Joe Isgro that was distributed by Epic Records; however, when Isgro was implicated in a 1986 radio promotion scandal, Private I Records collapsed. Instead, the album was quietly released by Epic's CBS Associated label, where it went largely unnoticed, despite the appearance of the last Twilley/Seymour song, "Shooting Stars".
After the failure of "Wild Dogs", Twilley found himself without a label (or a lead guitarist, as Bill Pitcock IV had quit), although the Dwight Twilley Band albums were reissued in CD form with bonus tracks by the audiophile DCC Compact Classics label in 1989 and 1990. Twilley also contributed one track to the hugely successful 1992 Wayne's World soundtrack, "Why You Want to Break My Heart" from Jungle.

Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour met in Tulsa in 1967 at a theater where they had gone to see The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night, and soon began writing songs and recording together. They continued their partnership over the next several years under the name Oister. Twilley wrote all the songs and played guitar and piano, Seymour played drums and bass, and both sang leads and harmonies. Guitarist Bill Pitcock IV played lead guitar on most of their tracks.
In 1974 they went to Los Angeles to find a label ... where they ironically signed with Shelter Records, a label co-owned by Denny Cordell and Tulsa's Leon Russell, in 1974. Cordell promptly changed the group's name from Oister to the Dwight Twilley Band, which set the seeds for future problems arising from Seymour's anonymity in the partnership.
Their first single, "I'm On Fire", reached #16 on the charts in 1975 with relatively little promotion, largely because the band was in England recording its first album, tentatively called Fire, with producer Robin Cable at Trident Studios.
When the album was finally released in 1976 with the name "Sincerely", it surprisingly failed as well, peaking at #138. During this time, Seymour and Twilley befriended labelmate Tom Petty and contributed backing vocals on several of his tracks, creating a long-lasting friendship.
Shelter then switched distribution again to Arista Records. ABC elected to keep Petty and J. J. Cale, leaving Twilley alone on the Shelter/Arista label. Pitcock became a credited member of the Dwight Twilley Band during touring and recording of the second album. However, that album, Twilley Don't Mind, proved to be another commercial disappointment in 1977, despite a guest appearance by Petty. Seymour left the band the following year, pursuing a solo career with some success until he developed what proved to be terminal cancer. He died of lymphoma in 1993, and Twilley still does not perform Dwight Twilley Band songs that featured lead vocals by Seymour.

Energy Orchard were an Irish guitar-based rock band of the late 1980s and early 1990s, from Belfast. Fronted by Bap Kennedy on lead vocals (brother of Irish singer-songwriter Brian Kennedy), their style drew heavily on the influence of Van Morrison and other classic RnB, but incorporated traditional elements of Irish folk music to create a unique sound. The band emerged from the remnants of two other Belfast-based punk/new wave bands, namely The Bank Robbers and 10 Past 7.
Following much hype of the band's early live gigs at the New Pegasus the band were signed to MCA on the personal recommendation of Steve Earle.
The other members of the band were Paul Toner (lead guitar), David Toner (percussion), Joby Fox (bass guitar), Spade McQuaid (rhythm guitar) and Kevin Breslin (keyboards).

Marshmelow Lane were going to be the second album by "The Real People" but never saw the light. Some of the tracks from it were included in the compilation "The Calm Before the Storm" which celebrated Liverpool's contribution to Britpop .The other part of the album included songs from the band called "Rain", formed in 1988 in Huyton, Liverpool with main influences from The Who, The Rolling stones, The La's and The Beatles.
Along with The Real People, The Tambourines, The Farm and The La's, Rain were based at the forefront of the music scene in Liverpool, building up a strong following and fan base.
As with The Real People, Rain signed up with Columbia records in November 1989. Shortly after signing the deal, drummer Mark Robson left the band and was replaced by Tony Mcguigan, formely of The Tambourines. The other members were Ned Murphy, Colin Clarke and Martyn Campbell.
Rain released their debut album "A Taste Of........" in July 1991 but it unfortunately created more attention because of the naked woman on the record sleeve artwork.
The CD is an historical record of where the Northern Indie sound of the 90's began. Both bands formed a solid foundation for the springboard for the new britpop bands of the mid-late 90's, Oasis, Blur etc. They paved the way - Maybe the Real People and Rain were just 5 years too early. Maybe they were just that... the "calm" before the "storm"!!!!

The Real People (or "The Realies" as they are known to their fans), from Liverpool, England, were one of the very first bands to play what is today known as “Britpop”, and have been quoted by Oasis as being one of their major influences. They were formed in 1987 by brothers Christopher and Anthony Griffiths, the original line up consisted of Chris Griffiths (guitar and vocals) Tony Griffiths (bass and vocals) Tony Elson (drums) (later to be replaced by Garry Ford) and Sean Simpson (guitar) (later to be replaced by Alan Gillibrand), and over the following 4 years were as pivotal as The La's, The Stone Roses in reinventing rock and roll after the synth led new wave music which dominated the 80s. They signed to Columbia Records in 1989 and released their self titled album and the singles Open Up your Mind, Window Pane and The Truth all to critical acclaim. They sold over 100,000 copies of the album and made significant inroads into Europe, Japan and the US. The follow up "Marshmellow Lane" led off with the top 40 single "Believer" but their label was sold to Sony and the band became an early victim of major label expansion at the expense of talent. CBS became an omprint of Sony and The Real People left, Marshmellow Lane sat on the shelf.

The Rebel Pebbles - 1991 - Girls Talk

The Rebel Pebbles formed in Los Angeles in 1989 and consisted of singer Rachel Murray, guitarist Karen Blankfeld, bassist Robin Fox and drummer Cheryl Bullock.
Rachel Murray met Karen Blankfeld - who had previously played drums for The Pandoras, and bass for Wednesday Week - through a newspaper ad.
Rachel signed on as the singer of the fledgling band, and along with Cheryl Bullock on drums and Robin Barnetti on bass, The Rebel Pebbles were ready for the world. They began playing gigs around LA and recorded a 3 song cassette-only EP for their own Teatime Records label, called Party Time. The Rebel Pebbles would replace the band's original bassist Robin Barnetti with Robin Fox following the release of Party Time, but the EP would do its job admirably by getting the Rebel Pebbles noticed.
Dream Lover would peak at a respectable number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100; however, the two follow-ups failed to break into the top 40.
The pressures of the constant touring built up and lead to troubles within the group. Bassist Robin Fox left the band citing musical differences, and was replaced by Margaret Ford, who fit in nicely with the band but who never actually signed on. Margaret was replaced by Leigh Cadwalleter, although there were to be no recording sessions with this final Rebel Pebbles' line-up. Commitment dwindled, and the band folded. The Rebel Pebbles had a compelling style, but they were unable to gain an individual identity. Perhaps in the final analysis, the Pebbles were simply not allowed to just be themselves and create the great music they were undoubtedly capable of creating beyond their first effort. The Lambrettas - 1980 - Beat Boys In The Jet Age

England in the summer of 1979 meant MOD: the Lambrettas formed near the south coast city of Brighton. The original members were: Jez Bird (vocals/guitar), Doug Sanders (guitar/vocals), Mark Ellis (bass), and Paul Wincer (drums).
The band played various venues around England, until being spotted by Elton John’s Rocket Records label. A Rocket album featuring a number of new and unknown artists included the Lambrettas first recording, Go Steady. By the end of 1979, Rocket decided to release the Lambrettas track as a single. By the early part of 1980, Go Steady had sold modestly, but with enough interest to persuade Rocket to sign the band.
The next release was a cover of the 1950s Lieber/Stoller song, Poison Ivy, previously recorded most notably by The Coasters and The Rolling Stones. The Lambrettas version, with brass arrangements, had a decidedly upbeat “ska” feel to it. The record was a huge success, reaching #7 in the British charts, and earning the band a silver disc.
The next single, Da-a-a-nce, was more typical of the band’s pop/rock sound, reaching #12 in the charts. Controversy occurred when they were about to release another cut from their debut album, Beat Boys In The Jet Age. At the last moment, the song, Page 3, had to be re-titled for single release as Another Day, Another Girl, after a court injunction by the Sun newspaper. The record was moderately successful. Towards the end of 1980, with Beat Boys doing well, the band went on a European tour, opening for the highly acclaimed band, Madness. (The ModPopPunk Archives)

Plan 9 - 1982 - Frustration

Outside of its art college, Rhode Island hasn't exactly been a storehouse for modern rock music. But the state has a group to be proud of in Plan 9, whose Frustration is exciting garage psychedelia. The swirling, mesmerizing effect of four (!) guitars recalls the best of the late '60s and gives able support to Eric Stumpo's emotional vocals. Guía Esencial de la Nueva Ola Española (Essential Guide To The Spanish New Wave) was an lp and cd (out of print) released at the same time as the publication of an eponymous book written by Fito Feijoo, Pablo Carrero and Pepe Palau.
It's a review to some of the best songs of Spanish New Wave bands, played by indie bands of the 90's.
Including excellent power pop bands like "Los Protones", "Happy Losers", "Feedbacks", "Malconsejo" or "Mineralwater", it's an essential tribute to those bands that relaunched the Spanish musical scene that until then had been sunk in the absolute mediocrity, except for rare exceptions.

Microdisney began recording in their native town of Cork, Ireland, producing a muted, heavily melodic, atmospheric sound. Their first few singles, including 1983's "Pink Skinned Man" were produced by Dave Feeley and released on small indie labels like Kabuki. After relocating to London, they signed to Rough Trade and tapped John Porter (producer of The Smiths) to produce their debut album, Everybody's Fantastic. At this time the band became acquainted with John Peel, who championed their music and gave them the first of several Peel Sessions. Soon after, bassist Jon Fell and drummer Tom Fenner were added as a permanent rhythm section. Microdisney's sound gradually became more commercial and chart oriented, as heard on their 1985 release, The Clock Comes Down the Stairs, and its corresponding single "Birthday Girl." Despite this stylistic shift, Coughlan's lyrics grew increasingly sardonic and scathing. "Town to Town" (1986) is a rock-along sing song about yuppies attempting to live normal lives amid a nuclear holocaust, while their 1987 single "Singer's Hampstead Home" is often described as an attack on Boy George (of Culture Club fame) and the media circus that surrounded his post Culture Club years. In 1988, with chart success and mainstream acceptance having continually eluded them, Microdisney disbanded.
Like many bands who may otherwise have gone completely unrecognised, Microdisney were given a wider audience by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel.
During their career recorded for Kabuki, Rough Trade and Virgin record labels. Albums included the early compilation We Hate You South African Bastards! (later renamed Love Your Enemies), Everybody Is Fantastic and The Clock Comes Down The Stairs. After signing to Virgin Records they released two more albums Crooked Mile and 39 Minutes. The Clock Comes Down the Stairs was voted no. 1 album of the 1980s in the 1989 end-of-year edition of the Irish newspaper The Sunday Tribune.
They disbanded in 1988, with Coughlan forming The Fatima Mansions and O'Hagan forming The High Llamas, retaining Jon Fell. Post break up two further compilations were issued of previously released material - Big Sleeping House—a Collection of Microdisney's Finest Moments, and the Peel Sessions which has most of their collected BBC John Peel sessions apart from the last one.

Personal Column were a Liverpool band, functioning from 1980-1986 (emerging somewhere between the Crucial Three and Frankie in the chronology of Liverpool bands), based around the songwriting of Marc Vormawah and Colin Brown. Big favourites of John Peel, they did three sessions for his show, as well as sessions for Kid Jenson and Simon Bates. There were records as well: two singles on the band's own Contrast label, and one on Stiff.
Recordings 1982-86 is the Personal Column album that never was.
You can download it song by song from the band website or in an only file from this blog.
The difference: I've normalized the songs to 0 db's (with the same bitrate of the original files -over VBR 160-) and I've did artworks for cd box in jpeg format.
I've ripped Strictly Confidential 12" from the original vinyl (Bitrate 320) with the spanish original artworks.

Australian pub rock and R&B-influenced "Moving Pictures" are best remembered for their power ballad "What About Me?," which shot the band to number one in Australia in 1982. Formed by singer Alex Smith and writer Gary Frost, they signed with Wheatley management in 1981 and released two singles, "Walls" and "Bustin Loose". Their debut album, Days of Innocence, was released in October 1981 (Australia), 1982 in Europe, but it wasn't until the release of the number one single "What About Me?" in January 1982 that Days of Innocence also topped the charts. "What About Me?" went on to win the Best Single Award at the 1982 Countdown Awards. (All music)

Personally, my favourite song is "Joni and the Romeo".

The group was comprised of Alex Smith (vocals/occasional guitar), Garry Frost (guitar/piano), Andrew Thompson (saxophone), Charlie Cole (keyboards/trumpet), Ian Lees (bass) and Paul Freeland (drums).

Spain turned the Euro 2008 final into a football fiesta on Sunday, playing a dazzling passing game as they deservedly swept away Germany with a 1-0 victory.

A brilliant 33rd-minute goal from striker Fernando Torres graced a magnificent final whose scoreline did not reflect the supremacy of the superb Spanish side.

The long overdue victory in a major tournament sent fans in Madrid and all over Spain pouring on to the streets where they prepared for night-long celebrations, waving red and yellow banners and singing "Viva España".

Germany, as everyone knew they would, fought hard in Vienna and occasionally threatened on the break but they could not match the silky skills and swift inter-passing of veteran coach Luis Aragones's team.

In the end, Spain had 13 shots on goal to Germany's four, and seven on target to Germany's one, statistics which better reflected the margin of the Iberian triumph.

Thousands of Spanish fans in the Ernst Happel stadium celebrated ecstatically as they watched Spanish captain and keeper Iker Casillas hold the European trophy aloft after receiving it from UEFA president Michel Platini.

Though long recognised as one of the great football nations and producing an endless series of gifted players, Spain's only previous major trophy was the European title in 1964. Their only final since was the European in 1984 when they lost to France.

MIDFIELD ARTISTS

But they proved to be the delight of the three-week tournament in Austria and Switzerland, their midfield artists Xavi, Andres Iniesta, David Silva and Cesc Fabregas producing sublime passing moves which had neutrals drooling with pleasure.

The contrast in the final was clear. The Germans played stereotypically solid football.The Spaniards played football of flair and fantasy.

But the difference was also Torres, a superb striker who had been mostly misfiring in the tournament until the final with just one goal and a barrowload of misses to his name.

His electric pace earned him his goal as he raced on to a great through ball from Xavi, touched it on and then sprinted round defender Philipp Lahm, stretching to dink the ball with his right foot past advancing German keeper Jens Lehmann and just inside the far post.

It was a great goal worthy of a great final and of a great tournament.
"This is the most important title after the World Cup. I am going to enjoy this, this victory is good for football," Torres said afterwards.

Germany, as Russia before them in the semi-final, were simply outclassed. Though injured captain Michael Ballack overcame a calf muscle injury to play, he was never able to exert his full influence on the match.

He was consoled afterwards with words of commiseration from German chancellor Angela Merkel as he picked up his loser's medal.

Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, seated nearby in the VIP stand, cheered their national team and were on their feet to celebrate Torres's goal.

After the match the entire Spanish squad danced a conga inside the stadium as they sang "Viva España".

Punk helped restore a nervy, stripped-down sensibility to rock that was quickly filtered through a number of more pop-oriented bands that were labeled as new wave. Not surprisingly, many of these new wavers were holdovers from pub rock, whose unpretentious, anti-star attitude foreshadowed punk rock. These pub rockers were devoted to the three-minute pop single, but they also had a biting wit and kinetic energy that separated them from conventional pop/rock bands, and the best of this first wave of new wavers are collected on the dynamic D.I.Y.: Teenage Kicks: UK Pop (1976-79). Beginning with Nick Lowe's explosive "So It Goes," the collection runs through a series of classic singles from Eddie & the Hot Rods ("Do Anything You Wanna Do"), Wreckless Eric ("Whole Wide World"), the Motors ("Dancing the Night Away"), Tom Robinson Band ("2-4-6-8 Motorway"), Squeeze ("Take Me, I'm Yours"), the Only Ones ("Another Girl, Another Planet"), XTC ("This Is Pop?"), the Rezillos ("Top of the Pops"), and the Undertones ("Teenage Kicks"), throwing in a number of forgotten gems along the way. Although the collection doesn't feature Elvis Costello due to licensing restrictions, he isn't missed -- in fact, the collection plays better without him, since focusing on overlooked artists demonstrates what an amazing era new wave was for smart, catchy guitar pop. Picking up where Teenage Kicks left off, D.I.Y.: Starry Eyes: UK Pop II is even more pop-oriented than its predecessor, and that's taking the Buzzcocks' searing "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've?)" into consideration. Although it includes a handful of great singles from artists that were on Teenage Kicks (the Undertones' "Get Over You," XTC's "Life Begins at the Hop," Squeeze's "Up the Junction," the Revillos' "Where's the Boy for Me?"), plus Joe Jackson's familiar "Is She Really Going Out With Him?," Starry Eyes shines in rounding up terrific singles from under-appreciated artists like Bram Tchaikovsky ("Girl of My Dreams"), the Jags ("Back of My Hand [I've Got Your Number]"), the Records ("Starry Eyes"), the Searchers ("Hearts in Her Eyes"), and Purple Hearts ("Millions Like Us"). These are sparkling pop songs, with ringing guitars and immediate, catchy melodies. Spear of Destiny is a British rock band, formed in 1983 by singer and songwriter Kirk Brandon and bassist Stan Stammers.
Brandon had previously been in The Pack, and from 1980 to 1982 in the post-punk Theatre of Hate with its album Westworld and single 'Do You Believe In The Westworld ?', which was a UK Top 40 single in 1982, whilst the album made the Top 20.
As had happened with Joy Division and New Order, the band were criticised for using the name Spear of Destiny, with its potential Nazi overtones. Any such links were fiercely denied, particularly since the band were politically left-leaning.
'The Price You Pay' was the fifth studio album released by Virgin Records in 1988.

Another recovery of the Power Pop Lovers blog. A small compilation of the first Spanish bands of the new wave. It includes the first recordings and the original artworks.
For the spanish bloggers they are very well known, and some of them also for the foreigners, especially 'Los Secretos' thanks to the magnificent cover of Déjame by 'The Mockers'.
This one is a small tribute for all those bands that invigorated the Madrid scene in the 80's.
Probably somebody will think that lack or exceed bands, but it's a good sample.

Los Valendas - 2006 - Sugar Coated Lies

Valendas is a municipality in the district of Surselva in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland, but also is one of the best Indie bands of the spanish scene in the 90's.
This is the history of the album:
In 1996 "Los Valendas" disbanded, but in 1998 they think about possibility of returning to play together and new songs were written, all this work was gathered in a scale model of 16 subjects recorded in May of 1999 with the incorporation of Emili Gené to the keyboards. In October-November of 2000 they began to record the first songs with the intention to publish an EP that never will see the light.
In December of 2001, they began the recording of "Sugar Coated Lies" with the drummer Lluis Segura; in April of 2002 the albums was finished, or that seemed at least… They spend four years with the album in the drawer and Los Valendas lived in a state of semi-hibernation until March of 2006. Then, they began remixes, adjustments and re-recordings of some of the songs of the CD.
Today, courtesy of Xavier Escutia (he has sent me the cd), I can post it.
I've wanted to put it like it is. For that reason there are two ways to get the album. One, over 475 Mb, is a Nero image file of the album (5 parts) and one file with the complete artworks.
The second way is the rip of the cd in mp3 at 320 kb with the artworks also (over 180 Mb)
